Saint Lawrence River Cruising

st lawrence cruise lines

With everyone back on board, the cruise continued down river, past the Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge. Then we passed through a narrow cottage-lined passage to Iroquois Lock, with the smallest lift/drop of all the locks in the St. Lawrence Seaway. The islands are now inhabited by large trees and cormorants that have stripped away all the foliage from the trees.

This cruise will take you to witness the island paradise and natural and man-made charm of the archipelago.

We were welcomed aboard by the captain, and then taken to Cabin 18 on the St. Lawrence Deck. We were told how to use our wall speaker, the heating and air conditioning system, and most importantly how to use the toilet. Dinners included delicious comfort food such as tender roast prime rib of beef with horseradish, Duck a l’orange, salmon and sirloin steak, and even turkey dinner with all the trimmings. We were asked at lunch what our preference for dinner was from two options, and it was quite acceptable to ask for both, as we did a couple of nights.

Nights $2327 CAD

Lunches typically included soups, salads and a sandwich or quiche with a dessert choice daily. All meals were served in the Grand Saloon, adjacent to the lounge and galley. I read that the ship clientele was typically retirees, however, it was nice to see a mix of guests ranging in age from their mid-40’s to 95, and all guests were mobile and active.

From a bustling downtown with shimmering skyscrapers to endless beaches, Miami is an urban paradise all year long. Enjoy a plethora of things to do before your cruise out of Miami. If you crave an exhilarating day of adventure on the water, head to Oleta State Park for a myriad of water sports in the Biscayne Bay. WOW-WORTHY SIGHTS IN THE MAGIC CITY

We did the included excursion and had a hopeless guide, so our review would not have been favourable. I have traveled between all continents by sea and cruised along three dozen rivers. My journeys have translated into many books and many hundreds of articles.

Registrations are now open for the Cruise Canada New England Symposium!

Much is still not known about the two dozen St. Lawrence Iroquoian tribes that had vanished by the time Québec City founder Samuel de Champlain arrived in the early 17th century. The river was a major entry point for exploring North America, and during the Seven Years' War the British navigated to Québec City to defeat the French at the Plains of Abraham. Today, some 200 miles of the river are called the whale route, along which some 13 resident species thrive, including blue, beluga and right whales. There are no formal nights though people did dress a bit more spiffy (business casual) on the cruise's last evening. True, Canadian Empress, which hails from the one-ship (and family-owned and -operated) St. Lawrence Cruise Lines, isn't fancy. Cabins have no balconies, marble bathrooms with fancy amenities (bring your own shampoo) or in-cabin televisions.

In the Tower gift shop, I found the old carnival characters that had been preserved quite intriguing and a true throwback to a bygone era. They reminded us of when 45 years ago, my husband and I worked as “carneys” (carnival operators) at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. We rode an elevator to the top of the Tower, built in 1965, and enjoyed a view of the islands with great view of the Ivy Lea Bridge that opened to traffic in 1938, with panoramic views of Canada and the USA. We eventually docked in Morrisburg and walked along the waterfront with stately homes and friendly cottagers waving as we strolled by.

My Final Thoughts of St. Lawrence Cruise Lines’ Canadian Empress

On Gananoque’s waterfront there’s a grand Victorian building designed in the tradition of the late 19th century two storey “grand cottage”. This museum is dedicated to interpreting the history, geology, ecology, and culture of the 1000 Islands region. Arctic Cruise Around Svalbard By John Roberts The High Arctic is the land of the polar bears, walruses, and incredible ice floes and formations that encircle the top of the world. Heading to this remote region on an expedition cruise is one of the all-time travel... By Heidi Sarna I had a chat with travel advisor Kevin Flink about travel insurance. I met Kevin on a recent UnCruise in Alaska, where we had the opportunity to discuss the pros and cons of travel insurance.

June through September is the best time to sail the St. Lawrence because the weather is pleasant, and summer festivals are underway. Temperatures in July and August hover in the mid-70s, and June and September are slightly cooler. May and October are the shoulder season months for cruising; temperatures are chilly but tolerable. May can be rainy, but it's less crowded, and October has the added advantage off stunning fall foliage colors.

We actually learned about things we saw from other pax once back on the ship. Passengers by and large hailed from Canada or the U.S. (with a few Germans and Britons in the mix). Interestingly, many of them were devoted river cruisers who'd never even considered travel on a contemporary ocean-going cruise ship.

If you are old enough to recall the nightly newscaster Gabriel Heatter, he began his nightly news broadcast with “Good evening everyone, there’s good news tonight.” Indeed, there is great news for those cruisers... With reviews, articles and destination overviews, we’ve got you covered. It would be fun to continue to explore my own backyard and cruise with St. Lawrence Cruise Lines along some other Canadian waterways including the Ottawa River and the St. Lawrence Seaway up to Montreal. Upon arrival, we bid farewell to the crew and snapped some final pictures with some other guests. We agreed that we could easily have stayed for a few more days.

Which means you can fill your year with even more bucket list adventures. Ted & Heidi are long-time travel writers with a penchant for small ship cruising. Between them they've traveled all over the world aboard hundreds and hundreds of small cruise ships of all kinds, from river boats to expedition vessels and sailing ships. Port Santa Cruz de Tenerife cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands.

Canadian Empress is a riverboat that, while built in 1981, attempts to replicate a Victorian era atmosphere. And it works, not just in decor but in onboard ambiance, ultimately offering a cruise experience that for most of us -- particularly big ship ocean-cruising aficionados -- could seem somewhat precious and quaint. Endowed with a rich legendary past, the Saint Lawrence offers modern-day cruise ship passengers a veritable feast of nature and culture set against a backdrop of beguiling French flair.
